Abilities: Intuitive, Psychic, and Mediumship Abilities

Intuitive Abilities

Have you ever had a “gut feeling” about something that leaves you questioning whether or not you should trust it because you have no idea where it came from? That’s probably your intuition. This is the part where I say, “these are opinions from my experience, so take what you will and leave the rest.” Then, I move on with my blog.

Intuition is an inner knowing with no basis in logic. It appears consciously in a variety of ways: hearing, sight, feeling, knowing, smell, taste, etc. and can be used as a guide or inner compass of sorts. For example, one morning you decide to ditch your usual route to work because you “feel” that another route is a safer option without shifting into looking for a logical explanation for that feeling. Later that day, while watching the news you find out that there was an accident backing up traffic on your usual route.

But, what would happen if you chose not to listen to your intuition? You begin convincing yourself that there’s no reason to take another route, at least that you can physically see, and you disregard the feeling. While driving, you stop rather abruptly as the car in front of you rear ends another leaving a pile up waiting for emergency services to arrive. Unfortunately, you’ve made a huge misstep in receiving and utilizing intuitive information. Although nothing is wrong with questioning your intuition to gain insight, you shifted into convincing yourself that the information you received should be disregarded due to a lack of explanation that presents as physical, tangible evidence. Ultimately, resulting in a dangerous, yet preventable situation. You’ve decided not to follow what originally was supposed to be a “quick intuitive hit” in favor of your ego searching for a logical explanation. While ego is necessary and just as important, it is vital to be able to capture and distinguish between your ego and intuition. Especially, how they feel or work for you together and separately.

After years of observing, training, and solidifying trust in myself I distinguish my ego and intuition through a personal rule: ego convinces, intuition knows. Meaning that I can go back and forth in an internal dialogue with my ego, but my intuition is firm and clear in knowing. Using the previous example, my ego will engage in an internal back and forth dialogue convincing me that I may be silly for taking another route to avoid an accident. There’s nothing in the traffic reports and the roads are deemed clear. But, my intuition will be subtle, yet clear and unwavering in giving me information regarding what is to come.  Overall, the major keys in staying in tune with and using my intuition are rooted in being able to distinguish between my ego’s search for logic, being familiar with my intuition and how I receive information, having an open and silent mind practice, and letting the information flow with trust as to what I’m receiving.

Psychic Abilities

People often ask me, “What’s the difference between psychic ability and intuition?” In my opinion, the two actually aren’t that different except that I experience intuition as a quick, out of nowhere “knowing” or hunch while psychic abilities are more in-depth. For me, both can be loud or quiet with a mix of assertiveness, but never abrasive in nature. The stereotypical views of those who truly have the gift of psychic ability can’t even measure up to what it’s actually like to have and use it. The information may only come through emotionally for one individual, while another may receive through all senses (hearing, sight, feeling, knowing, smelling, tasting, etc.). How one with intuitive, psychic, or mediumship abilities uses or experiences their gifts may differ from the next all with varying degrees of intensity on the senses.

Using the car accident scenario, psychic information might appear as: hearing sounds of a car crash, seeing vivid images of a chaotic car accident in your mind’s eye, or feeling/knowing that either you or someone else is going to get into an accident.  Some examples of abilities linked to the way in which the information is received through the senses are:

Clairaudience (clear hearing): hearing words, phrases, or whole sentences in a pitch slightly higher than your voice and other noises (sometimes in different volumes) on an intuitive, psychic, or mediumship level.

Clairvoyance (clear sight): seeing images in the “mind’s eye” or imagination space on an intuitive, psychic, or mediumship level.

Clairsentience/Clairempathy (clear feeling/empathy): feeling on an emotional and physical level the feelings, emotions, physical ailments/sensations, attitudes and overall energy of other people, places, things, animals, etc. that are separate from your own on an intuitive, psychic, or mediumship level.

Claircognizance (clear knowing): knowing past, present, future, or subtle energetic information in the form of simple thoughts that cross your mind on an intuitive, psychic, or mediumship level.

Clairgustance (clear tasting): tasting past, present, future, or subtle energetic information such as the memories attached to the perfume of someone who has passed on an intuitive, psychic, or mediumship level.

Clairalience (clear smelling): smelling past, present, future, or subtle energetic information such as the memories or information attached to food or drink on an intuitive, psychic, or mediumship level.

Mediumship Abilities

Mediumship is the practice of communicating with the dead and acting as a “medium” between those in the spiritual realm and the living. Similar to psychic abilities, mediums use their gift in a way that best suits them and the way they receive information. For example, there are some mediums that can only communicate with spirits of deceased animals as opposed to deceased human beings or use certain tools/rituals. While one medium may only be able to feel the presence of spirit, another can smell, hear, and see the spirit. To illustrate using the car scenario again, mediumship information might appear as: hearing a deceased guide communicate that there will be an accident or seeing a deceased individual or guide warning you with varying degrees of intensity.

It’s important to note that not all mediums have psychic abilities and not all psychics have abilities to be a medium. While one individual may only be psychic, another could be a medium or have both abilities. In practice and using those abilities, there are also boundaries that one can utilize in working with those in spirit. If the medium (or psychic) requires a certain level of respect, method of connection, or only certain types of communication this can be required of the spirit. One medium, like myself, may require connections that are within the boundary of being positive and respectful while another may be open to communicating with all beings in all ways. But, as I’ve said, this differs between each practitioner.

With all of that in mind and the importance of intuition as a basis for greater abilities, I challenge you to ask yourself:

  1. Do you believe in having intuition?

  2. Do you know how to use your intuition?

  3. If so, how do you use your intuition and how does the information come through?

  4. When have you trusted and followed your intuition?

  5. When have you ignored or resisted your intuition?
